The white cross of Monte Gazzaro

Once you have got to the mountain foresummit, a white cross appears to you along with a summit book in an old box (with symbolic figures on it) hidden under a bench made of "pietra serena". It is extremely rare to find a cross in the foresummit of a mountain.

The Medicean Fortress of San Martino

The fortress, commissioned by Cosimo I in 1569, is almost a ruin but it is being rebuilt.

Due to its strategic position on a hill over the River Sieve, it defended the city of Florence.

A secret passage crossed the mountain up to the river so that animals could also quench their thirst.

Depots were used for the storage of food and weapons, wind mills, tanks, ovens and armories for the construction of cannons.

Bosco ai Frati monastery

Built by the Ubaldini Family before the year 1000, it passed to the Brazilian monks who abandoned it later. In the "Stanza dei Medici" you can watch a small museum of sacred art and a Donatello's wooden crucifix. There are also sculptures, paintings and typical pottery of Cafaggiolo.

The pottery of Cafaggiolo

Around 1495, Lorenzo dei Medici moved to Villa Cafaggiolo, followed by Piero and Stefano di Filippo Schiavon brothers, two potters who had worked for him in Florence.

They invented the majolica pottery of Cafaggiolo, marked with crossed letters "S" and "P".

San Piero a Sieve

San Piero a Sieve was an important village in the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic position and its bridge. The bridge, which connected Florence to the Romagna and the Casentino to the Valdarno, was repeatedly destroyed by the River Sieve flood and was restored to its original shape until the 1943 bombing.

The Romanesque Parish Church

It is a Romanesque typical church built in the Florentine area between the 11th and the 12th centuries. Considered as one of the oldest churches of the Mugello region, it houses important works of art like the baptismal font attributed to Giovanni della Rubbia.
